Rev. Dr. August R. Suelflow Called to Church Triumphant
Rev. Dr. August R. Suelflow, adjunct professor of historical theology and seminary archivist at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and director emeritus of the Concordia Historical Institute, died suddenly on Saturday, August 28, 1999. He was 76 years old.
Visitation will be in the Great Hall of the Armbruster-Donnelly Funeral Home, 6633 Clayton Rd., Clayton, Mo. from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 31. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, in The Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus on the Concordia Seminary, St. Louis campus. Internment will be at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Freistadt, Wisc.
Suelflow was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Rockfield, Wisc. He attended Concordia College, Milwaukee, Wisc. (diploma 1942); Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (B.A. 1944, M.Div. 1946, S.T.M. 1947). He was awarded the D.D. degree by Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ill. in 1967.
Suelflow served as assistant curator, Concordia Historical Institute, St. Louis, Mo. (1946-48); director (1948-95); director emeritus since 1997; assistant pastor, Luther Memorial, Richmond Heights, Mo. (1948-56); Immanuel, Olivette, Mo. (1956-58); Mt. Olive, St. Louis, Mo. (1958-75); guest lecturer, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo. (1952-69, 1974-75); adjunct professor since 1975; chairman of the department of historical theology (1976-81); seminary archivist since 1976; guest lecturer, Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Ill. (summer 1967); instructor, Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. (1967-82).
Survivors include his wife, Gladys (nee Gierach) of St. Louis; a son, August Mark (Yvonne) of Parker, Ariz.; and a daughter, Kathryn Lynn Dubois (Dr. Craig) of McKinney, Tex.; grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, Heidi and Holley Dubois and Taylor. He is also survived by two sisters: Viola Strzyzewski of Milwaukee, Wisc., and Vera Sweeney of VanNuys, Calif.
