Pre-Lenten Workshop for pastors set for Jan. 15
Dr. Reed Lessing to lead discussion of Job’s teaching on suffering
Everyone suffers — personally and privately. Some people also suffer in more public ways. A husband loses a job. A child gets divorced. A parent dies. And now, owing to today’s super connected society, people are able to see and experience more and more of the world’s catastrophes and suffering.
The book of Job and its seminal teaching on suffering is the subject of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis’ annual one-day pre-Lenten workshop for pastors Friday, Jan. 15, 2016.
Dr. Reed Lessing, senior pastor of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Ind., and a former professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary, will lead the workshop, titled “The Book of Job: Blessed be the Name of the Lord!”
“The book of Job is one of the most magnificent compositions in the Bible,” Lessing said, “and is numbered among some of the greatest literature of all time. People need the book of Job, now, more than ever.”
Pastors will explore nine sermons that dig deeply into Job’s central message and supporting truths, plus six adult Bible class lessons that further address the book’s major topics and themes. They will come away with sermon manuscripts, textual notes, orders of service for midweek services and also suggestions for the Sundays of Lent to help them in developing their own worship resources.
Lessing is an active writer and speaker who has delivered presentations throughout The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in district, congregational, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Lutheran Laymen’s League and youth settings. He also has written for Lutheran Witness.
The workshop meets from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Koburg Hall on the Seminary campus. Registration is $50 and includes materials and lunch. The registration deadline is Jan. 4.
