Rev. Dr. Norman E. Nagel, graduate professor of systematic theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, has been honored with a doctor of laws degree from Concordia College, Bronxville, New York. The degree was awarded Nagel at Concordia College’s May 13 commencement “in recognition of his long career in ministerial education.”

Nagel was born to a New Zealand missionary couple working with Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod missionaries in Kuling, China. He received his baccalaureate degree from the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia in 1945. He is a 1953 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England in 1962.

His pastoral ministry experience includes serving as pastor of Luther-Tyndale, London, England (1954-57) and as pastor and preceptor of the Westfield House, Cambridge, England (1957-68).

His experience as a professor includes serving as university preacher, dean of the chapel and professor of theology at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind. (1968-83). Nagel joined the Concordia Seminary faculty in 1983, serving as professor of systematic theology (1983-92) and graduate professor of systematic theology (1992-present), and chairman of the department of systematic theology (1986-92 and 1994-95).

Nagel’s scholarship and expertise in systematic theology have made him a sought-after lecturer at theological symposia and pastoral conferences in the United States and around the world.

“It is an honor for Dr Nagel, and also for Concordia Seminary and our whole church, to recognize the significant contributions he has made as a theologian, scholar, and pastor,” commented Dr. Andrew Bartelt, vice president for academic affairs at Concordia Seminary. “Yet, as Dr Nagel himself would remind us, all glory goes to God alone for His gifts and for the privilege of receiving them!”
